Television Centre – it’s just an intermission

bbc proposed

The press this week is full of nostalgic coverage of the end of an era as the BBC leaves its long term home at Television Centre (TVC) in West London – but little is made of what the future holds for this iconic building.

Over the last week we have seen the departure of the major BBC News bulletins to their new home in Broadcasting House, Simon McCoy and Sophie Long did a particularly poignant closing bulletin. as they were the last news team to use this facility.

Similarly, other reports have focused on the end of TVC – Tim Roberts coverage talks of Goodbye to the Dream Factory whilst others bidding a fond farewell to TVC have asked the question why did it have to close?

As somebody who has worked hard to protect the legacy of this unique icon of British television, I wondered how best to articulate the future which is not what most people envisage. In a nutshell TVC is not going away – it’s having a well earned intermission but will be back “on air” in the not too distant future to provide audiences with a world class experience of the best of British Television which will celebrate the heritage and legacy of the British Television industry, which for a long time has been the envy of the rest of the world.

The views of the Studios business have just been published and to quote their CEO Anna Mallett ” it’s an intermission but not the end”

So stay tuned!
